World FM Day 2026: The people powering better workplaces

The people shaping the future of facilities management

In recognition of World FM Day 2026, Mark Robinson, Commercial Director at NJC, reflects on the growing impact of facilities management and the people driving the industry forward.

The blog explores how the industry is evolving, why people remain at the centre of great FM, and why the future of the sector has never looked more exciting.

World FM Day is an important moment for our industry.

Not because facilities management suddenly becomes important for one day a year, but because it gives us a chance to recognise the people who keep organisations running every single day.

For a long time, FM was seen as something that sat quietly in the background. If everything worked, nobody noticed. If something went wrong, suddenly everyone did.

But over the last few years, that perception has started to change. Businesses now understand something FM professionals have always known: workplaces have a direct impact on performance, wellbeing, sustainability, and culture. Safe, well-managed environments don’t happen by accident - they happen because of the people behind them.

Through my role at NJC, and through conversations on the Facilities Management Exchange Podcast, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with people across every part of the sector. One thing that always stands out is the strong sense of community within FM and the willingness people have to share ideas, support each other, and continually raise standards.

That feels especially relevant this World FM Day, with this year’s theme focused on cultivating belonging through built environments. Because belonging isn’t just something FM helps create within workplaces. It’s something that increasingly exists within the industry itself too.

Modern FM is becoming more influential than ever, helping organisations improve workplace experience, resilience, employee wellbeing, and operational performance. Despite the pace of change across the sector, the biggest differentiator will always be people.

People who solve problems before they escalate. People who quietly keep businesses moving every single day without seeking recognition for it.

And that’s really what World FM Day is about.

Recognising the teams and individuals whose work often goes unseen, but whose impact is felt every day across the organisations they support.

So today is a chance to simply say thank you.

To everyone working across facilities management: your work matters, your expertise matters, and the role this industry plays in shaping successful organisations has never been clearer.

Happy World FM Day.

Mark Robinson,
Commercial Director
